Starting a career in PR without a degree might seem challenging, but Ruby Robinson has shown that it’s not only possible but it can also lead to significant success. In just two and a half years, Ruby has risen from intern to Senior Digital PR Executive at Digitaloft, building her career through hard work, smart networking, and a passion for everything PR and digital. In this post, Ruby delves into her inspiring journey and offers practical advice for anyone looking to break into PR or the corporate world without following the traditional academic path.

Breaking the PR or corporate world without a degree can seem daunting, but it is absolutely possible! Many aspiring PRs, like myself, have chosen to skip university, believing that real-world experience and faster career progression can be gained by jumping straight into the workforce. This path can lead to quicker career progression than anticipated.

Step 1: Start with Entry-Level Roles

The first step is to identify entry-level roles that offer a foot in the door. Positions like PR Assistant, Marketing Coordinator, or Administrative roles in corporate settings can provide invaluable experience. These roles are not just stepping stones, they’re your opportunity to learn the ropes, build your network, and demonstrate your value in the industry.

💡Don’t be afraid to start small. Look for internships, part-time roles, or volunteer opportunities that align with your career goals. These experiences can be pivotal in building your resume and giving you a taste of the industry.

Step 2: Embrace the Digital World

In today’s digital age, a deep interest in all things online is essential. The world of Digital PR is particularly accessible to those without a degree because it’s evolving so rapidly. Companies are always looking for fresh perspectives to gain a competitive edge, attract new customers, and access new markets.

💡 Immerse yourself in digital marketing and communication. Follow industry blogs, engage with content on social media, and familiarise yourself with tools like Google Analytics, social media schedulers, and content management systems.

Step 3: Develop Core Skills

Focusing on essential skills like communication, writing, and content creation is key to your success. Fortunately, there are countless online courses and workshops available to help you hone these skills. Certifications from platforms like Google, The Chartered Institute of Marketing, or LinkedIn Learning can boost your credibility and give you a competitive edge.

💡 Set aside time each week to complete an online course or attend a webinar. These small but consistent efforts will build up your skill set and keep you up-to-date with industry trends.

Step 4: Network, Network, Network

In PR, who you know can be just as important as what you know. Attend industry events like the Digital PR Summit or BrightonSEO, join professional associations, and connect with other PRs on LinkedIn. Networking is crucial - even as an intern or assistant, the connections you make can lead to future opportunities.

💡 Don’t just attend events—participate! Ask questions, introduce yourself to speakers, and follow up with connections on LinkedIn. A well-crafted LinkedIn message can open doors to mentorships, job opportunities, and collaborations.

Step 5: Build Your Online Presence

Demonstrating your expertise through a strong online presence is a must. Platforms like LinkedIn, X (Twitter), or even a personal blog are great avenues to share your insights and knowledge. By consistently creating content - whether it’s blog posts, industry round-ups, or thought pieces - you build your personal brand and showcase your passion for the industry.

💡 Start by setting a goal to post regularly on LinkedIn or your blog. Share your experiences, comment on industry news, and engage with others’ content to establish yourself as a knowledgeable and passionate professional.

Breaking into the PR or corporate world without a degree requires persistence, a commitment to continuous learning, and a proactive approach to networking. With the right mindset and strategy, you can build a successful career by gaining experience, showcasing your skills, and connecting with the right people.

Remember, your path may look different from others, but that’s what makes it unique and valuable. Keep pushing forward, stay curious, and don’t be afraid to carve out your own space in the industry!
